Abstract

This article aims to comprehensively examine the dynamics of the dowry money problem in marriage practices in South Sulawesi, from historical, social, and normative perspectives. This research uses a case study method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, field observations, and searches for related documents. The data obtained were then analyzed by examining various problems that arose due to the increasing demands for dowry money from the woman's family. The results of the study indicate that: (1) the high demand for dowry money has developed into a serious problem that in some cases deviates from the cultural values of siri' as the moral and legal basis of the Bugis community. These deviations are reflected in the practice of elopement (silariang), the occurrence of premarital pregnancies, the increasing number of unmarried women at an advanced age, and the use of dowry money as an instrument of covert rejection of prospective grooms by setting an economically unrealistic nominal amount. (2) Various strategies have been developed by the community to anticipate and resolve the dowry money problem, both through customary mechanisms, family mediation, and adjustments to applicable social and legal norms.
